For the first three league games of the season, Real Madrid have managed to win all three, bagging nine points.

Of course, winning is a usual occurrence for the Spanish side, but what is not normal over the last decade or so is seeing Toni Kroos and Luka Modric on the bench.

Both players have been instrumental in the club’s success story since joining. With over 900 Real Madrid appearances betwee them, starting this campaign as mere bench players is something unusual.

Toni Kroos started against Almeria on matchday 2 in the league due to Eduardo Camavinga having fitness problems.

Both players have been on the bench in any other game, both have come on as substitutes.

According to Marca, Kroos and Modrić were told by Ancelotti that their minutes will be reduced but they will continue to have weight in the team, especially when there are two games a week.

In the summer of 2022, Ancelotti already sensed it and met Kroos, Casemiro and Modric during pre-season in Los Angeles.

The coach explained to them that perhaps they were going to have to distribute minutes in the presence of players such as Tchouameni, Valverde and Camavinga.

Real Madrid’s midfield transition seems to be paying off. Fede Valverde has already shown his quality in the past seasons, whereas Camavinga was instrumental in the club’s run to the 14th Champions League title.

Tchouameni has quality, and has started the campaign on a high note. Then, the tip of the diamond appears.

Jude Bellingham has been the best player in Real Madrid’s first 3 games of the season. He has managed to pick up the Man of the Match award in all three games, scoring 3 times and assisting 1.

It is in no doubt that Carlo Ancelotti will continue to trust his young midfield core throughout the season.

Toni Kroos and Modric will have minutes, but not as  regular as previously.

The Croatian joined Real Madrid exactly 11 years ago today for a reported 30 million pound fee, while his German teammate joined 2 years later for a 25 million euro price tag, which his agent later described as the ‘steal of the century’.
