With Toni Kroos announcing his retirement at the end of the upcoming UEFA European Championship, Real Madrid is poised to enter the transfer market in search of a replacement. Among the names being touted as a potential successor is Bayern Munich’s versatile midfielder, Joshua Kimmich.

Asked about the midfielder’s retirement, head coach Carlo Ancelotti said in a press conference last month: “Toni Kroos thought it was the right moment to retire. I respect this a lot, even though I think his departure will affect us. We lose a very, very important player. We have an idea how to replace him with Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouaméni. We will play a different football but our success won’t change.”

His words suggest Real Madrid are not thinking of going to the market but nothing can be ruled out.

Kimmich’s Imminent Departure from Bayern

According to Florian Plettenberg, a noted football journalist, the possibility of Kimmich leaving Bayern Munich either this summer or in the near future is growing. Kimmich is entering the final year of his contract, which expires in 2025, and he appears increasingly ready to move on. Bayern Munich, aware of the risk of losing such a valuable player on a free transfer next year, are reportedly open to selling him during this transfer window if they receive suitable offers.

Direct Negotiations with Kimmich

Unlike many top footballers, Kimmich does not employ an agent, meaning that clubs interested in acquiring his services must contact him directly. This unique situation requires a more personal approach, potentially streamlining negotiations but also adding a layer of complexity to the transfer process.

Elite Clubs in the Running

Only five top-tier clubs are currently in contention to sign Kimmich: Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. These clubs are drawn to Kimmich not only for his skill and versatility but also for his leadership qualities and tactical intelligence on the field.

Kimmich’s Financial Considerations

At Bayern, Kimmich is one of the highest earners, with a gross annual salary of around €20 million. Any club looking to secure his signature will need to match or exceed this financial package, making him an investment not only in terms of transfer fees but also salary commitments.

The Real Madrid Perspective

For Real Madrid, Kimmich presents an attractive option. His ability to play multiple positions – as a defensive midfielder, a right-back, or even in central defense – aligns well with Real Madrid’s tactical flexibility. Furthermore, his experience at the highest levels of club and international football would make him a valuable asset as the club seeks to maintain its dominance both domestically and in Europe.

With the departure of a legend like Toni Kroos, the arrival of a player of Kimmich’s caliber would signal Real Madrid’s intent to remain at the pinnacle of world football.
