Carlo Ancelotti’s last hope: Real Madrid’s dependable duo in times of injury crisis

Real Madrid is navigating a challenging period with a string of injuries affecting the team, but amid the setbacks, the veteran midfield duo of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos has emerged as the linchpin holding the squad together.

Coach Ancelotti finds himself in a tough situation as nine players are currently on the injury list.

While the likes of Bellingham, Ceballos, and Kepa are expected to make a comeback soon, the recent pause in the season has hit Real Madrid hard, especially in crucial midfield and attacking positions.

The blow of Camavinga’s knee ligament injury, sidelining him for eight to ten weeks, and the uncertain status of Vinicius with a mysterious muscle problem have created significant gaps in the squad.

To address Vinicius’s absence, Ancelotti is turning to Joselu and Brahim. However, it’s the seasoned partnership of Modric and Kroos that is set to play a pivotal role in filling the void left by the young Brazilian in the midfield.

Known as the ‘Old Rockers,’ Modric and Kroos had different starts to the season, with Kroos establishing himself as an undisputed starter, amassing 889 minutes and featuring prominently in crucial encounters.

Meanwhile, Modric had a more restricted role, logging 647 minutes and often appearing as a substitute in key games.

The injury crisis has brought these two experienced players to the forefront, demanding more significant contributions from them. Their limited playing time together this season, sharing the field in only ten matches for a total of 227 minutes, is a statistic that the duo will be eager to change.

Previously focused on controlling games in the second half, Modric and Kroos now face the challenge of not just maintaining stability but also initiating the team’s play from the start.
