In a testament to his enduring prowess, Real Madrid’s defender David Alaba has been voted as ‘Footballer of the Year’ in Austria for the tenth time, according to the Austrian news agency APA, via MD.
The 31-year-old, currently sidelined due to a left knee ligament tear, received the honor from Austrian Bundesliga coaches.
Alaba, who had previously secured this accolade six times consecutively between 2011 and 2016, now adds four consecutive wins since 2020 to his impressive record. Despite his injury setback, the Madridista remains the most successful Austrian footballer in history, boasting an unmatched ten awards.
Having begun his football journey in the youth ranks of Austria Vienna, Alaba spent the majority of his career at Bayern Munich before joining Real Madrid in 2021. Since then, he has played a crucial role in the Blancos’ squad.
Unfortunately, Alaba sustained an injury during a league match against Villarreal last weekend. Shortly thereafter, he underwent surgery in Austria, with the slim possibility—according to experts—of making a comeback for the Austrian national team in the Euro 2024, set to kick off in Germany in June.
The acknowledgment of Alaba’s excellence, once again voted by coaches, highlights his enduring impact on the sport and his significant contributions to both club and country, solidifying his status as a football icon in Austria.
