When Real Madrid signed Eden Hazard from Chelsea in 2019, he was undoubtedly amongst the top three best players in the world. His impressive performance in the 2018/2019 season which led to Chelsea winning the UEFA Europa League propelled Real Madrid to sign him for a club record fee of 115 million euros.

To understand the level of Eden Hazard at that time, there are reports that a clause was included in his Real Madrid contract in case he won the Ballon D’or.

During the 2018/2019 season, Eden Hazard played 52 games, scoring 21 times and assisting 17. In 2018, the player was knighted in Belgium for his World Cup heroics, leading his nation to a bronze medal.

The government of Wallonia, the French-speaking southern half of Belgium, granted Eden the role of Commander of the Walloon Order of Merit. His honour is equivalent to a UK knighthood in terms of prestige.

Just as Michael Scofield dueled a lot of faith in the Prsion Break series, the football world had a lot of faith in the potential Eden Hazard possessed. He showed it in England, and his dream was to play for the best club on the planet. His talent took him there…but!

One injury on a faithful night against Paris Saint-Germain started Eden’s downfall. Returning to pre-season after his Real Madrid presentation, the player had gained extra weight and struggled a bit in the games before the season began.

The player himself stated in 2022: “When I arrived at Real Madrid, I had gained too much weight. I had taken advantage of my leave after the Chelsea – Arsenal Final. But after 3 weeks of training I had lost everything (the weight he had gained)!”

But as the season went on, glimpses of the talented superstar began to emerge. Then one injury, bang! To put this in perspective, he played 76 games for Real Madrid and missed 78 through injury. Eden left Real Madrid a couple of months ago after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the club.

Since leaving the Spanish capital, the former Belgian captain has not signed for any club yet. Spanish newspaper Marca report that he is on his way to retirement. The only offer he has received so far is one from a Belgian second division club KVC Wasterlo. He is now condemned to retire.

Eden is not known to be very active on social media and has not communicated anything about his future yet after retiring from the national team. For the moment, all roads lead to a possible goodbye to the game.
