In a heated faceoff between Betis and Real Madrid, there was a controversial Real Madrid penalty claim within the first ten minutes as Rodrygo took a tumble in Betis’ area following an incident involving Ruibal.

Rodrygo surged in from the left, outmaneuvered the Betis defender, but fell as he attempted a shot due to contact from the Betis player. The Madrid forward vehemently appealed for a penalty, echoed by the entire Real Madrid bench.

Referee Soto Grado, positioned close to the action, deemed the contact insufficient to warrant a penalty for Rodrygo, a decision that could have potentially swayed the match early on.

Iturralde González, an expert in refereeing for AS and Cadena SER, commented about controversial Real Madrid penalty claim on Carrusel Deportivo, via AS, stating, “One thing’s for sure, it’s not a VAR-worthy action, not a clear-cut situation.”

Adding further, he said, “It’s a play riddled with doubts. In my opinion, it’s evident it’s not a case for VAR, and I have reservations about whether the contact justifies awarding a penalty. In these instances, we must lean towards the referee’s interpretation.”

As tensions simmered, Betis also cried foul for a potential penalty just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Abde maneuvered the ball inside the box and then fell after Lucas Vázquez attempted a clearance.

Iturralde’s perspective mirrored the earlier incident, stating, “Similar to Rodrygo’s play, it’s part of the game. Another situation that appears more significant in slow motion than it actually is live. For me, it’s not a VAR call either, and once again, we must respect the referee’s decision.”

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, where Jude Bellingham scored for Real Madrid, netting his 16th goal across all competitions. Betis struck back through Aitor Ruibal’s stunning strike, equalizing the scores.
