Nacho Fernández, a longstanding pillar of Real Madrid’s defense, is on the brink of a move to Al Qadsiah in the Saudi League, managed by Míchel. As his departure from Los Blancos becomes increasingly imminent, Real Madrid faces the challenge of reinforcing their defensive lineup.

Los Blancos themselves had a hard time in the just-ended season. Both first choice center-backs suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage and were left out for the most part of the campaign. Real decided not to sign any replacements, relying on Antonio Rüdiger and the departing Nacho.

Here are four strategies they could employ to address the gap left by Nacho’s exit.

Signing Leny Yoro from Lille

Real Madrid’s primary target is Leny Yoro, the 18-year-old sensation from Lille. Yoro has impressed in the French championship this season, making him a hot commodity in the transfer market. Despite his contract expiring in 2025, securing his services won’t be easy or cheap, with Real Madrid setting a cap of 40 million euros. Competition is fierce, as PSG, Manchester United, and Liverpool are also in advanced discussions with the player. However, Yoro has expressed a strong desire to join Real Madrid, potentially giving them an edge. Ideally, Real Madrid would prefer Yoro to complete his contract at Lille and join on a free transfer next year, similar to how Rüdiger and Alaba were signed.

Promoting Rafa Marín

Initially, Real Madrid considered Rafa Marín, a promising 22-year-old defender, as a direct replacement for Nacho. However, with multiple clubs showing interest in Marín, including Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, and Milan, Real Madrid are now open to selling him for 10-15 million euros. This potential sale could help finance the acquisition of Yoro. Marín’s departure would, however, mean Los Blancos need to explore other defensive options internally.

Utilizing Youth Prospects: Marvel and Carrillo

Real Madrid boasts a wealth of talent in its youth system, with two standout prospects being Marvel and Carrillo. Marvel, highly regarded by coach Carlo Ancelotti, was set to be promoted to the first team following Militao’s injury but suffered an untimely injury himself. Despite this setback, his potential remains significant. Carrillo, a 22-year-old defender with experience in Real Madrid’s Castilla team, is another viable option. Known for his versatility and reliability, Carrillo has proven himself under the guidance of Raúl, contributing to the UEFA Youth League triumph.

Repurposing Aurélien Tchouaméni as a Center-Back

In the absence of new signings, Real Madrid could consider repositioning defensive midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni as a center-back. Tchouaméni’s defensive skills and versatility make him a potential candidate for this role, providing a stopgap solution while the club secures long-term defensive reinforcements.

Conclusion

Nacho Fernández’s anticipated move to Al Qadsiah marks the end of an era at Real Madrid. However, with strategic planning and leveraging both emerging talent and existing squad versatility, Los Blancos can navigate this transition. Whether by securing a promising young star like Leny Yoro, promoting from within, or creatively utilizing their current roster, Real Madrid aims to maintain their defensive strength and continue their pursuit of success on all fronts.
