‘It’s my fault’: Carlo Ancelotti speaks after Madrid derby defeat

It was a night to forget for Real Madrid and its fans. A derby defeat at the hands of your fiercest city rivals is certain to be one of the most painful days in football.

On Sunday night at the Civitas Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid hosted Real Madrid. The game corresponded to matchday six of the 2023/2024 La Liga EA Sports season.

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata opened the score after just three minutes through a sublime header.

Real Madrid had no answer to Simeone’s tactics. For the first thirty minutes of the game, Atletico Madrid were in total control.

The ‘rojiblancos’ created several chances and eventually got the second goal in the eighteenth minute, also through a header by French international Antoine Griezmann.

Through a powerful shot from long range, Toni Kroos pulled one back for the 35-time league champions.

It did not take up to a minute after the second half got underway, and Alvaro Morata got his second of the day and Atleti’s third.

This was Real Madrid’s first loss of the season, after going five games in the league without dropping any points.

Questioned for his change of system ahead of the game, Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media after the game.

On the change of formation, the Italian said: “The formation will not change. We haven’t started well, we haven’t defended well. We have not been forceful. Atléti did better than us.”

The gaffer also took full responsibility for the loss: “It’s my responsibility. I have a very big back. There’s no problem. Taking it is the least.”

Why Joselu was benched

“I wanted more ball control, that’s why I put one more. I think the scheme was not a problem, but one of defensive fragility. Something that had not happened to us in the first games, because until today we had only conceded three.”

Atleti’s defence

“The fact that Atléti is one of the teams that defends best in Spain… They are strong in duels, it is not easy to find spaces. There was a lack of effectiveness, but today the problem was defensive, not offensive.”

Why Kroos and Modrić started

“I was trying to put a little more ball control and I wanted to give Tchouaméni a break.”

Feeling seeing Modrić come off

“We don’t point out anyone. And pointing out to him would be too much. He hasn’t played a good game, but like the teammates.”

“Would I change anything about my approach? It’s a good question… I think I could do it better. Obviously when the team doesn’t do what it has to do, it’s my responsibility. But my shoulder is very strong…”

Mood after the game

“We are sad and angry, but we must learn. And we will continue.”

Lack of goals

“Lack of Vinicius resulting in lack of goals? Vinicius couldn’t score today. For Rodrygo, with small spaces, it’s complicated.”

Real Madrid continue their season on Wednesday as they host Las Palmas at the Bernabéu. It is expected that star forward Vinicius Junior will be available for the game.
