James Rodríguez has opened up about how he ended up making the decision to join Real Madrid in 2014 following his impressive performance in the World Cup, during an interview on the Twitch stream of Pelicanger.

He was a hot property at the time, with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City also bidding for him.

However, in the end, James chose Real Madrid because he wanted “glory”. He believes that there is nothing like Real Madrid in the world. The President of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez played a significant role in convincing him to sign for the Spanish giants.

“Florentino Pérez called me and asked me what I wanted, money or glory? I told him I wanted glory, and he replied, ‘Okay, it’s done,” said James, reminiscing about the moment.

James’ stint at Real Madrid can be divided into two parts. In his first year, the midfielder had a great season, scoring 17 goals and 18 assists, with Carlo Ancelotti as the head coach. However, his role started to lessen after Zinedine Zidane took over the managerial position in January 2016.

He was eventually loaned out to Bayern Munich in 2017 to secure regular minutes before returning to Real Madrid for a second chance. Unfortunately, the midfielder still couldn’t replicate his past performance and was unable to make a significant impact, leading to his departure.

Since that time, James has played for several other clubs such as Everton, Al-Rayyan SC in Qatar, and Olympiakos before finally joining Sao Paulo, his current club. As he is about to end his contract, it appears that Sao Paulo may not be interested in extending his deal.

Therefore, the 32-year-old footballer could find himself without a club again. It’s a far cry from when he chose Real Madrid because he wanted to achieve his dreams, leaving his future now in the balance.
