The 2023/2024 football season has not started as it has been for Luka Modric during the past 11 years at Real Madrid.

The Croatian, currently on international duty, did not start in any of Los Blancos’ first three league games of the season. He played ten minutes against Athletic Club, eighteen minutes against Almeria and twenty seven more minutes against Celta. In total, he played 55 minutes out of a possible 270, a 20.4% participation percentage.

In the build up to Croatia’s game against Turkey, the captain of the side faced the media and answered questions on his minutes distribution and sitting on the bench often than usual.

“Well, it is definitely a new situation for me not to play as much as I want. I always want to play, and I do not want to take breaks. I want to play because this is the time when I feel at my best, and this is the way. With which I prepare better for matches.”

Luka continued: “This situation may have some advantages for the future but I want to play every three days if necessary. This is a normal, natural process and I accept it and I have to prepare myself mentally and move on. I feel good physically and motivated, I feel good, full of energy, otherwise, I could hardly lead Croatia as captain.”

Following Croatia’s 1-0 loss in the game, Modrić was again asked about rumours circulating suggesting he might consider leaving Real Madrid in January if his situation does not change: “Well, I wouldn’t want to get into it now, there’s still a lot of time till winter and end of year. At my age you can’t plan anything in advance, you have to go one day at a time from game to game. We’ll see what the future will bring.”

Already this season, the 38-year-old was substituted at halftime in Real Madrid’s loss to City rivals Atleti. He was then dropped for the next two league games against Las Palmas and Girona which left him without minutes.

This consecutive games without minutes broke an 11-year record where for the first time since 2012, he did not feature in back to back Real Madrid games.

In October 2012, he failed to come on in Real Madrid’s 4-1 win at Ajax in the Champions League group stage and missed the Clásico four days later.
