Madrid progressed to the Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after a chaotic and entertaining 5-3 victory over Atletico that extended into deep extra-time.

In a frantic derby-day clash, Hermoso opened the scoring with a sixth-minute header, quickly matched by Rudiger’s nod to level proceedings. Mendy then edged Los Blancos ahead, but a fine Griezmann goal before half-time restored parity as he became Atleti’s top scorer in history.

The second half saw less drama until late on when Kepa’s own goal following a contentious Morata challenge put Atletico in front. However, Carvajal’s rocketed 85th-minute leveller sent the game into an additional 30 minutes.

A penalty shootout seemed imminent, but Savic’s inadvertent deflection into his own net after 116 minutes and Diaz’s game-clinching goal with the final kick secured the victory for Real Madrid.

Ancelotti’s side will contest Sunday’s final against either Barcelona or Osasuna, while Simeone’s men will seek revenge on Madrid in the Copa del Rey round of 16 on January 18.
