Real Madrid have secured the long-awaited signing of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, but questions linger regarding the future of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Mbappe, 25, joins Los Blancos on a free transfer after years of speculation. While no transfer fee is involved, the club is compensating the forward handsomely with a €100 million signing bonus and a hefty €30 million annual salary.

The club, however, expects a significant return on investment. Reports suggest they aim to generate “close to €500 million” through sponsorships, merchandising, and social media capitalizing on Mbappe’s global appeal.

Lunin, 25, enjoyed a breakout season at Real Madrid, stepping up admirably after injuries to Thibaut Courtois and Kepa Arrizabalaga. His performances were instrumental in securing the La Liga title, Champions League trophy, and Spanish Super Cup.

Impressed by Lunin’s contributions, Real Madrid are reportedly close to extending his contract until 2029. However, Lunin’s camp seems disgruntled by Courtois’ reclaiming the starting spot upon his return from injury, particularly after Lunin was sidelined with the flu in the lead-up to the Champions League final. They believe Lunin has a “big market in Europe” and are considering an exit.

This creates a dilemma for Real Madrid. Will Lunin stay and fight for the starting position, or will he seek a club where he can be a guaranteed starter? With Courtois’ established presence, Lunin faces an uphill battle.

According to The Athletic, Lunin’s camp is mulling an exit due to Courtois reclaiming the starting spot upon his return from injury. Lunin’s entourage reportedly views this as a “punch in the stomach” and believes the goalkeeper has “a big market in Europe.”

With Mbappe secured, Real Madrid now face the challenge of managing their goalkeeping situation. Will Lunin stay and fight for his place, or will he seek a club where he can be a regular starter?
