Real Madrid set to unveil new striker – report

After Benzema’s departure, it was sure that Real Madrid were going to to into the market to sign a number 9. Even with the departure of Mariano Diaz, the club wanted to sign a replacement, and it seems they have got their answer in Espanyol’s Joselu. As reported by Jorge Picon, Real Madrid have completed his signing and will announce it next week with his official presentation on Tuesday. The club has been following the player for months and sees him as an ideal profile to strengthen the team.

There was a clause in his Espanyol contract which allowed him to sign for any La Liga side able to match his current salary. Having previously played for Los Blancos, he arrived at the club in 2010 from Celta Vigo and spent time with Castilla. He was the top scorer in his first season alongside Alvaro Morata. He scored a combined 33 goals in his first two seasons with the junior side.

José Luis Mato Sanmartín, also known as Joselu was born in Stuttgart, West Germany. He made his Real Madrid first team debut as a substitute for Karim Benzema against Almería and scored almost immediately from a Cristiano Ronaldo cross. In the first team, he did not enjoy success and was transferred to the German club Hoffenheim in 2012.

The player was quoted few days ago saying: “Any player on planet Earth would like to wear the Real Madrid shirt”, when asked about Los Blancos’ interest. Joselu was in Paris last year to watch the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool. He was spotted in Paris wearing a Real Madrid shirt and says it was to support Dani Carvajal who happens to be his brother-in-law. This past season, the 33-year-old played 38 games in all competitions, scoring 17 and assisting 4.
