Predictions are fun, especially when they come true. To see what they anticipate will happen at the end of the season. Also, to take a snapshot so that you can refer back to it in June when everything is over. This is why reading the predictions on the specialized pages is one of the most popular exercises done every year.

Since “FiveThirtyEight”, one of the pages dedicated to making these forecasts, closed its sports section, Opta is an excellent source of this information. On their page “The Analyst”, they provide a number of forecasts based on competition and match. Their supercomputers provide percentages for various outcomes. Which team advances to the next round of the Champions League based on where they finish in the league standings at the end of the season.

Manchester City to defend UCL title

Right now, Manchester City is the clear favorite to win the Champions League again, based on the facts. According to Opta, they have a 31.14% chance of winning the tournament, compared to Real Madrid’s 14.37%. It affects not only City’s inherent bias but also the fact that their round of 16 clash against Copenhagen is unbalanced and the algorithm predicts they will advance to the quarterfinals (93% likelihood of making it that far).

Likelihood of Spanish teams to qualify to the quarter finals

In the round of 16, it presents the Spanish with an alternative future. Real Madrid had a 70% chance of making it to the quarterfinals as opposed to Leipzig’s 30%; Barcelona would struggle but could also be dominant against Naples (60%–40%); Atlético would lose to Inter Milan (36%–64%); and Real Sociedad would lose to PSG in a tie that is going to be close (41%-59%).

Real Madrid to win LaLiga

According to The “Analyst”, Real Madrid will win La Liga in 90.5% of the scenarios. Girona still has a 6.5% chance to win the championship, while Barcelona’s is 1.9%. According to Opta, Míchel’s team would come in second place (50.2% versus 24.5% for Xavi’s team), followed by Barça in third place and Atletico de Madrid in fourth, though Simeone’s club is under siege from Athletic, who comes in fifth.

The situation for the bottom team, Almería, is evident here, since they have an 81.3% likelihood of placing there. In 54.2% of the scenarios, Granada would be in penultimate place; the battle is for the final relegation spot. The following cities have predictions for the 18th position that advances to the second round: Cádiz (23.3%), Alavés (19.6%), Celta (17.2%), Granada (16.6%), Seville (9.3%), and Mallorca (6.9%).

According to Opta, Liverpool has 34.1% of the possibilities, while Manchester City would win the Premier League in 59.2% of the cases. Despite Xabi Alonso’s excellent efforts at Bayer Leverkusen, the supercomputer still views Bayern Munich as the Bundesliga winner with 68.5% of the possible answers, compared to 30.1% for the current leader. Inter is a strong favorite in Italy, with an 82.3% likelihood of winning the championship compared to Juve’s 17%, and PSG would win Ligue 1 in 95.9% of the scenarios in France.
