Real Madrid’s unofficial pursuit: A meeting with Nico Williams’ agent behind the scenes

Real Madrid recently engaged in talks with Felix Tainta, a prominent Basque agent, regarding Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, according to the latest reports from Relevo.

This discussion occurred a couple of months ago when the Spanish international was in the final year of his contract. Real Madrid’s interest was contingent on Nico being available on a free transfer.

During these discussions, Real Madrid officials conveyed their interest in Nico only if he refrained from renewing his contract, a condition that neither the player nor his agent had initially considered.

Nico Williams, out of gratitude and commitment to Athletic Bilbao, never intended to leave the club for free. The idea of a potential move to Madrid without renewing for the entire season was deemed unrealistic.

While several discussions took place between the parties involved, no significant progress was made. Nico Williams was more inclined towards renewing his contract, and Real Madrid did not propose the idea of paying a transfer fee for the player, even at a reduced rate.

Other clubs, including Manchester City and Barcelona, also contemplated Nico’s acquisition without making decisive moves. Ultimately, Nico Williams chose to renew his contract, concluding a prolonged saga.

Despite a twist initiated by Tainta when an agreement seemed imminent, Nico’s reputation remained intact. At 21 years old, he now has ample time to continue his growth at Athletic Bilbao or consider offers that meet his satisfaction.

This behind-the-scenes revelation sheds light on Real Madrid’s strategic approach in the transfer market and the complexities involved in pursuing players in the final year of their contracts.
