Real Madrid is easily one of the most recognizable football clubs in the world. The club’s rich history, past story and impressive record has made The Spanish giant one of the most successful and iconic teams in football. However, many madridistas are not aware of how the club got its name and the history behind it.

The story of Real Madrid’s name goes back to the Spanish monarchy. The club was initially called Madrid Football Club, the club was founded in 1902 by a group of Spanish enthusiasts, led by Juan Padros and his brother Carlos Padros . In 1920, King Alfonso XII granted the title ‘Real’ which translates to ‘royal’ in Spanish to the club. The honor was a result of the club’s support during the early days of the monarchy.

In the early 1920s, Spain was going through a period of political and social turbulence. At the time, football clubs were being used as political tools by various factions. The king realized the potential of football to unite the country and wanted to use the game to rally the people behind the monarchy and promote Spain as a unified nation.

The title ‘Real’ was not just symbolic, it also gave the club a certain status within Spanish society. The club’s full name is Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, and the title ‘Real’ is still used to this day, 2023 marked the 103rd year the title was first awarded to the club by King Alfonso XII.
