On Thursday morning, Real Madrid held a training session at Valdebebas, the penultimate session before the opening league game of the season. The session began after the club announced its third kit of the season.

Fans were ecstatic after seeing images of the new kit, but the happy moments were cut short.

News quickly broke that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had left training in tears after suffering what was then feared to be an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

Few minutes later, the official statement from the club confirmed that the player had indeed injured his ACL.

The official statement read: “After the tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. The player will be operated on in the coming days.”

The normal thing will be that the player will miss the entire season for a proper recovery. This, undoubtedly is a huge loss for the club. Courtois has been arguably the best goalkeeper in the world for some time now.

Real Madrid begin their season this weekend and will now have to depend on substitute goalkeeper Andriy Lunin for Saturday’s clash against Athletic Club.

As reported by Diario AS, Courtois wanted to stay behind after the team training with the other goalkeepers. He suddenly felt a ‘crack’ in his knee and left the pitch in tears.

Courtois took to his social media page to send a message after the injury was confirmed: “You never expect to go through something like this but now it’s time to accept it and do everything to overcome it and come back even stronger. Thank you all for the energy, love and encouragement, I assure you that they motivate me to recover as soon as possible.”

The Belgian goalkeeper is expected to undergo a surgery in the next days and the club will continue to assess his recovery.
