Roberto De Zerbi, currently the head coach of Brighton, has emerged as a potential candidate on Real Madrid’s shortlist for the managerial role, as reported by talkSPORT.

The 44-year-old Italian coach is currently under contract with Brighton until the summer of 2026 and is believed to have a release clause exceeding £10 million.

De Zerbi’s stock has risen considerably following his appointment as Brighton’s head coach in September 2022. His tenure has been marked by impressive results and an attractive style of football, which earned widespread acclaim during his brief time in charge.

Although there has been no official confirmation from Real Madrid, it is widely anticipated that Carlo Ancelotti will leave the club next year to take charge of the Brazilian national team.

Ancelotti’s tenure with the national team is set to commence in June 2024 for the Copa America, necessitating Real Madrid to seek a new head coach.

While reports from Marca earlier in the week suggested that the club had already chosen former player Xabi Alonso as their next coach, no official announcement has been made.

Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, was publicly endorsed by Ancelotti. However, the former Liverpool player recently extended his contract in Germany, potentially complicating any move to Madrid.

Other former players linked to the Real Madrid coaching position include Raul and Alvaro Arbeloa, both of whom are currently involved in the club’s youth system. However, neither possesses the coaching experience of Xabi Alonso.

Roberto De Zerbi stands out as a more experienced candidate compared to the trio of former players.

He has managed a total of seven teams since embarking on his coaching career in 2013. De Zerbi notably enjoyed success in Serie A with Sassuolo from 2018 to 2021 before taking the reins at Shakhtar Donetsk.

His spell at Shakhtar ended abruptly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which subsequently allowed Brighton to secure his services.

Under De Zerbi’s guidance, Brighton has entered European football competition for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history.

  1. As Real Madrid continues its search for Ancelotti’s successor, the experienced and accomplished Roberto De Zerbi remains an attractive option on their shortlist.
