Uruguay kickstarted their September international fixtures with a game against Chile in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.

Prior to the game, there were reports on Fede Valverde potentially being handed the captain’s armband.

He was the favorite of head coach Marcelo Bielsa to take over the captaincy.

The 25-year-old previously wore the armband for Uruguay in a friendly, and so the game against Chile would be his first official game as leader of his nation.

With the announcement of the starting lineup an hour before kickoff, it was indeed confirmed that Fede Valverde will start the game with the armband.

At the end of normal time in the first half and two minutes into added time, Uruguay sscored their second of the night through the young midfielder.

Fede received the ball just outside the penalty area from teammate Nicolás de la Cruz and unleashed a powerful shot with his right foot, which found the bottom corner of the net.

The Real Madrid midfielder was one of the protagonists of the game, creating as many as three chances.

After the game, head coach Marcelo Bielsa stated why the armband was given to Fede Valverde: “Giving Valverde the captain’s armband was the choice of his teammates.”

Uruguay will continue their World Cup qualifying campaign against Ecuador at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado on Tuesday.
