Real Madrid’s narrow victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu was overshadowed by controversial VAR decisions, once again sparking debate about the technology’s use in La Liga.

Los Blancos had a goal by Lucas Vázquez disallowed for a prior foul by Nacho, which infuriated manager Carlo Ancelotti. However, the winning goal scored by Luka Modric was allowed to stand, despite Antonio Rüdiger being in an offside position at the start of the play.

The VAR validated the goal, and referee Fernández Buergo, substituting for the injured Díaz de Mera, declined to review the play despite vehement protests from Sevilla players.

Ancelotti expressed his displeasure with the decision to disallow Lucas Vázquez’s goal, saying: “It’s difficult for the football world to get used to these new rules when VAR intervenes. It was created to correct obvious errors, and I didn’t think this was one. Nacho might have touched the foot, but he also touched the ball.”

Audio recordings of the VAR review process have since been released via SPORT, shedding light on the decision-making process.

In the audio, the VAR operator can be heard recommending that the referee review the play for a potential foul at the start of the attacking phase. The referee is then guided to the specific point of impact and shown a replay of the incident.

After reviewing the footage, the referee confirms that he sees a foul and decides to overturn the goal.

The controversial VAR decisions have reignited the debate about the technology’s role in football. Some argue that VAR is essential for ensuring fair play and correct refereeing decisions, while others believe that it is too intrusive and disrupts the flow of the game.

Regardless of one’s opinion on VAR, it is clear that the technology will continue to be a source of controversy in football.

The incident also highlights the growing importance of VAR in La Liga. In recent seasons, VAR has been used to overturn numerous goals and decisions, and it has played a significant role in determining the outcome of several matches.

As VAR becomes more and more prevalent in football, it is likely that the debate surrounding its use will only intensify.
