In a dramatic quarterfinal clash on Friday night, France narrowly eliminated Portugal on penalties, securing their place in the Euro 2024 semifinals. The match, a nail-biting spectacle for fans of both teams, saw Kylian Mbappé’s France overcome Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal after a tense penalty shootout. This result sets up a highly anticipated semifinal matchup against Spain.

Mbappé’s Real Madrid Connection

Kylian Mbappé, who recently joined Real Madrid, was instrumental in France’s victory. The 25-year-old forward’s transfer to Madrid a few weeks ago added an extra layer of intrigue to the match, given the number of his club teammates also featuring prominently in the tournament. Mbappé will be joined in the semifinals by Real Madrid colleagues Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy, all of whom have been crucial to France’s success so far.

Real Madrid’s Pre-Season Plans

Real Madrid had previously announced that any of their players who reach at least the semifinals of either the Euros or Copa America would not participate in the club’s US tour for pre-season. This policy aims to ensure these players, who have had little rest following the end of their respective continental competitions, receive an extended vacation of around two to three weeks.

This means all four French players will not be traveling with the squad for the pre-season tour, where Real will face AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea. Furthermore, all four players point to being starters in the team next season, which means head coach Carlo Ancelotti would have to start the season’s practice without vital pieces of his team.

It must be remembered that the four players will be joined by Dani Carvajal, who has also qualified to the semifinals with Spain. Jude Bellingham and England have also booked a place.

Mbappé’s Fitness Concerns

Mbappé’s fitness has been a topic of concern throughout the Euros. The possibility of him missing the full pre-season with Real Madrid could exacerbate these issues. Last year, Mbappé did not travel with Paris Saint-Germain for their pre-season tour in Asia, a decision some attribute to his current fitness challenges. Ensuring adequate rest and recovery will be crucial for the star forward as he prepares for the upcoming club season.

The Road Ahead

As France prepares to face Spain in the semifinals, the spotlight will be on Mbappé and his Real Madrid teammates. Their performance in the Euros has been a testament to their skill and determination, but the looming question of their fitness and readiness for the new club season remains. For now, French fans will hope their stars can carry this momentum into the next round, while Real Madrid supporters keep a close eye on their recovery and preparation for the season ahead.

This victory not only underscores the talent within the French squad but also highlights the interconnected nature of modern football, where club and international duties intertwine, impacting players’ careers and performance. As the tournament progresses, the focus will be on how well these athletes manage their dual commitments, ensuring peak performance both for their national teams and their clubs.
