In a recent, eye-opening interview with ‘The Guardian,’ Javier Tebas, the influential president of La Liga, didn’t shy away from expressing his strong opposition to the proposed Super League.

He accused its backers of attempting to grant unprecedented power to the wealthiest clubs, allowing them to dictate the course of European football.

Speaking from London (via MD), Tebas boldly stated, “The big clubs want the rest to survive on charity. I’m not afraid to speak my mind.”

Tebas voiced significant concerns about the revamped Super League proposal, going as far as to label it worse than its initial version, which faced considerable backlash and calls for elimination.

Despite acknowledging the existing football system’s flaws, Tebas insisted it remains superior and more efficient than the alternative put forth by the Super League.

The longstanding differences between Tebas and Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid and a prominent advocate for the Super League alongside Barcelona, stem from their conflicting visions for professional football, both domestically and in Europe.

Tebas accuses Pérez of envisioning a football landscape where elite, affluent clubs exert dominance, relegating others to subordinate roles.

Tebas also took a critical stance on state-backed clubs, highlighting the significant reduction in spending by Premier League clubs this season compared to the previous one.

He pointed out that state-backed entities played a substantial role in the prior spending spree and questioned the sustainability of such a model, noting that both UEFA and the Premier League have recognized its inherent drawbacks.

The interview provided insights into Tebas’s active participation in the recently established Union of European Clubs (UEC).

He clarified that the UEC aims not to oppose the European Club Association (ECA) but to contribute positively to the broader football landscape.

Lastly, Tebas reiterated his staunch commitment to preventing the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 32 teams, hinting at potential legal action if necessary.

La Liga President emphasized the adverse effects such an expansion could have on the football ecosystem and the well-being of players.

In conclusion, Tebas’s candid remarks shed light on his profound concerns regarding the potential reshaping of European football, emphasizing the necessity for a more inclusive and equitable model, rather than one dominated by a select group of affluent clubs.
